The Willamette Valley runs 150 miles south from Portland and produces some of the best Pinot Noir in North America. The AVA is divided into six sub-appellations — Dundee Hills, Yamhill-Carlton, McMinnville, Chehalem Mountains, Ribbon Ridge, Eola-Amity Hills — each with its own soil, elevation, and Pinot expression. Where you rent determines which of those sub-AVAs you actually taste through.
