A Jackson Hole cabin — and the four zip codes that mean four different trips

Teton Village versus Jackson town versus Wilson versus a Grand Teton-adjacent cabin. They're not the same trip, and pricing shows it.

Jackson Hole is a valley, not a town. The town is Jackson. The ski resort is Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, which is 12 miles from the town, at a base area called Teton Village. Grand Teton National Park starts at the north end of the valley. This confusion is why so many first-timers stay in the wrong spot.

The valley's rental supply is genuinely thin outside a few concentrations, and hotel rooms are five-star or dude-ranch cabins with limited middle ground. For groups of four or more, a Vrbo isn't a preference — it's what's available at the right size.

Downtown Jackson houses
Houses within walking distance of the Town Square arches — bars, dinner, the National Museum of Wildlife Art. The right base if the ski matters less than the town.

Wilson (the local side)
6 miles west of Jackson on the way to Teton Village. The Stagecoach Bar, the elk on the front lawn, and the quiet neighborhoods where the ski patrollers actually live.

Grand Teton park-adjacent cabins

Frequently asked

Where should first-time Jackson Hole visitors stay?

Teton Village if you're here to ski or want to be close to the tram. Downtown Jackson if you want to walk to dinner and bars and don't mind a 20-minute drive to the mountain. Wilson if it's summer and you want quiet with easy access to both. Park-adjacent if the trip is Grand Teton or Yellowstone-focused.

How much of a difference does staying in the park make?

In summer, a lot. National Park entry queues at Moose can be 45+ minutes during peak weeks; staying inside or immediately outside the south entrance means being at the trailhead at first light while the day-trippers are still driving in. In winter, the park is mostly closed and the location advantage evaporates.

Is Jackson better in winter or summer?

Different trips. Winter is a ski resort with quiet town evenings and a small nightlife scene. Summer is a Grand Teton / Yellowstone / river-rafting basecamp with restaurants at full tilt and a very short calendar — July and August are peak. Fall (September–October) is the sleeper: wildlife, elk rut, empty trails, and rentals half the July price.
