Moab is a small desert town of about 5,000 residents on Highway 191, and it exists because of what surrounds it: Arches National Park (5 miles north), Canyonlands' Island in the Sky district (30 miles), the Needles district of Canyonlands (a 90-minute drive south), and the La Sal Mountains (rising 12,000 feet directly east of town). The hotel supply is mostly chain motels along Main Street; the rental market is where the trip actually lives.
The right neighborhood depends less on the town and more on the trip. Downtown Moab if you want walking distance to Milt's Stop & Eat and the outfitters. Spanish Valley if you want a quieter house with a view of the mountains. Up the La Sal foothills for real solitude. Or up the Colorado River (Highway 128) for the cliff-side rentals that make the drive back to town worth it.

Peak seasons are March–May and September–October (mild temps, ideal hiking and biking weather). Book 3-4 months out. July and August in Moab are 100°F+ and cheap — houses drop 30-40% and the trick is early-morning hikes plus afternoon river time or higher-elevation La Sal escapes. Winter (December-February) is a real sleeper: quiet trails, occasional snow on the red rocks, and the best value.
How close is Moab to Arches vs Canyonlands?
Arches: 5 miles from downtown Moab (10 minutes to the entrance). Canyonlands Island in the Sky: 30 miles (45 minutes to the visitor center). Canyonlands Needles district: 75 miles (90 minutes) — this is why a Needles day-trip is a real commitment, and why some travelers base out of Monticello or camp there instead.
Do I need timed-entry reservations for Arches?
Yes, during peak season. Arches uses a timed-entry system April through October — you reserve an entry window in advance at recreation.gov. Book it as soon as you book the rental, because slots run out. Canyonlands does not require timed entry.
