Sedona has a very specific hotel supply — a couple of five-star resorts (Enchantment, L'Auberge de Sedona), a handful of upper-mid places on the Uptown strip, and not much middle. Rentals fill the gap: casitas, small houses, and the occasional estate up against a red-rock formation. Which pocket you book determines whether the trip is spa-morning-and-hike-afternoon or hike-morning-and-cook-dinner-at-the-rental.
The town is small — 10,000 residents — so distances are minutes not miles. But each pocket has a completely different feel. Uptown is walkable to jeep tours and shops. West Sedona is residential and where most rentals sit. Oak Creek Canyon is cabins along the water. The Village of Oak Creek is the sunnier, cheaper south end past the roundabout.

Is Sedona a good base for the Grand Canyon?
Yes — the South Rim is a 2-hour drive north via Flagstaff. Doable as a long day-trip from Sedona (leave at 5am, back by 8pm), but not the ideal Grand Canyon base. If the Grand Canyon is the main event, stay in Tusayan or the park itself. If Sedona is the main event, a single day-trip works.
