A Whistler chalet — and the four base areas that make or break a ski week
Whistler is North America's biggest ski resort by area, and every base area — Village, Upper Village, Creekside, Nordic — is a completely different trip.
Whistler Blackcomb is the largest ski resort in North America by skiable area (8,171 acres), sits 90 minutes north of Vancouver on the Sea-to-Sky Highway, and is genuinely resort-scale. The village at the base of the mountain is an entirely walkable pedestrian core built for ski access — which means where you rent inside that village, or one of the outlying base areas, changes the whole trip.
Four legitimate bases: Whistler Village proper (the walkable center, closest to both gondolas), Upper Village (Blackcomb-side, quieter, family-heavy), Creekside (5 min south, its own gondola, no walking-village), and the Nordic Estates / White Gold neighborhoods (residential, bigger houses, drive to lifts). Each has its own price band and its own personality.

Frequently asked
Which Whistler base is best for first-time visitors?
Whistler Village if you want the walk-out-of-dinner-and-into-a-bar experience and don't mind paying for it. Upper Village if you're a family — the Blackcomb ski school is right there and it's quieter. Creekside if you've been to Whistler once and want to skip the village-lift lines. Nordic/White Gold if you're a group of 6+ splitting a house and can shuttle.
How much do Whistler rentals cost vs a hotel?
Village condos run roughly comparable to hotel rooms per night on a per-key basis, but a 2-bedroom with kitchen and hot tub for a family of four is dramatically cheaper than two hotel rooms plus resort dining. The break-even is around three nights or four adults. Houses in Nordic/White Gold are 30-40% cheaper per person than any hotel option for groups of six or more.
When should Whistler rentals be booked?
Christmas week and Family Day weekend (mid-February in BC) fill 8-10 months out for anything ski-in-village. Mid-January and late March are the value windows and open up 3-4 months out. Summer in Whistler is a real trip — bike park, hiking, Peak-to-Peak gondola — with rentals at 40-60% of peak-season ski rates.
