That gondola is the whole trick: you never need a car once you arrive, and where you rent inside the two connected villages determines everything.

Historic Telluride if the town — bars, restaurants, historic-district walking — matters more than ski-in convenience. Mountain Village if ski-in ski-out is the whole point and you don't mind gondola-ing down for dinner. The gondola is free and runs late; the trip works from either base.
How do I get to Telluride?
Two airports. Telluride Regional (TEX) is 6 miles from town — small, seasonal, expensive, weather-cancels. Montrose (MTJ) is 65 miles north — bigger, more flight options, 90-minute drive on a canyon road. Many visitors fly into DEN and drive 6 hours as the affordable alternative. Rent 4WD in winter regardless of which airport.
When should Telluride rentals be booked?
Christmas week and President's Week fill 8-10 months out. Bluegrass Festival (mid-June) fills 9+ months out at premium rates. Late March through mid-April are the ski-value windows. Summer is a real Telluride trip too — hiking, festivals, blues and jazz — with rentals at 40-60% of ski-season rates.
