A Savannah rental — and the historic-district-vs-Tybee-Island split
Historic District is walkable and famous. Southside is the residential family base. Tybee Island is the beach. Pick one and lean in.
Savannah's Historic District is one of the most preserved 18th-century city plans in America — 22 square garden squares, live oaks draped in Spanish moss, and a walkable core that runs from Forsyth Park north to the Savannah River. It's what everybody comes for. The rental market inside the district is subject to strict permit rules (owner-occupancy requirements have tightened over the past several years), which means the legitimate Vrbo supply is more limited than most first-timers expect.
Tybee Island, 20 minutes east, is the Savannah beach counterpoint — laid-back, casual, more house-shaped rentals, real beach access. Southside is where much of the residential rental supply lives; farther from the historic core but easier logistics for groups of 4+.

Frequently asked
Which Savannah area is best for first-time visitors?
Historic District if you can find a legal permitted rental — the walkable Spanish-moss experience is what most people come for. Tybee Island if the trip is beach-focused. Southside as the value alternative for groups of 4+. The Landings only if the trip is golf-driven.
Are Savannah short-term rentals regulated?
Yes — Chatham County and the city of Savannah both regulate STRs, with tighter rules inside the Historic District. Legitimate Vrbo listings display a permit reference. Tybee Island has its own separate rules but they're less restrictive.
When should Savannah rentals be booked?
Spring (March-May) is Savannah peak — azaleas, mild weather, wedding season. Book 4-6 months out. St. Patrick's Day (mid-March) is legendary and books 6+ months out. Fall (September-November) is the second peak. Summer is hot and humid; winter is the genuine off-season with 30-40% price relief.
