Tiled streets, port wine & Atlantic surf
Portugal punches well above its weight with pastel-coloured cities, epic coastlines, and some of Europe's best-value food and wine. Lisbon and Porto are essential, but the Algarve and Azores steal scenes.

The capital, plus Sintra's romantic palaces, Cascais, Cabo da Roca and the surf at Ericeira. Lisbon needs four days; Sintra is a half-day side-trip done early to dodge crowds.
Port-wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, the riverboat to Pinhão, and quintas you can sleep at. Best in September vindima (harvest).
Cork forests, hilltop white villages (Évora, Monsaraz), some of Europe's quietest beaches at Comporta and Vila Nova de Milfontes. Rent a car.
Cliff coast from Lagos to Faro — Praia da Marinha, Benagil sea cave, Tavira's old town. Avoid July–August unless you like queueing for car parks.
Atlantic islands — São Miguel's volcanic lakes, Pico's wine, Madeira's levada walks. Direct flights from Lisbon and Porto; quietly the best surprise on the Portuguese map.
| Period | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Apr–early Jun | Sweet spot — wildflowers, comfortable cities, Atlantic still cool but swimmable south of Sagres. |
| Jul–Aug | Algarve packed and pricey; Lisbon and Porto manageable thanks to coastal breezes. |
| Sep–Oct | Best overall — vindima in the Douro, warm Atlantic, no school crowds. |
| Nov–Mar | Quiet, cheap, mild — perfect for the cities; Algarve hotels half-empty but many beach restaurants close. |
