Where to go in Colombia
Cartagena & Caribbean Coast
The walled old town, the Rosario Islands day-trip, Tayrona National Park, and Palomino's quiet beach. Three days for Cartagena, more if you island-hop.
Medellín & the Coffee Region
Medellín's transformation makes it South America's most underrated city — Comuna 13 graffiti, Provenza neighbourhood, the metrocable. Day-trip Guatapé. Combine with the Eje Cafetero — Salento, Cocora Valley, and finca tours through Quindío and Risaralda.
Bogotá & the Andes
The capital at 2,640m — La Candelaria's colonial centre, the Gold Museum, Monserrate. Day-trip the Zipaquirá salt cathedral; weekend Villa de Leyva.
Amazon (Leticia)
Three-country corner with Peru and Brazil; jungle lodges along the Rio Amazonas, pink-river-dolphin spotting, indigenous community visits. Fly from Bogotá.
Pacific Coast (Nuquí, Bahía Solano)
Humpback whale season July–October, jungle meeting black-sand beach, no roads in. Fly from Medellín.

US, UK, Canadian, Australian and EU passport holders enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Yellow fever certificate required if entering from Brazil, Peru, or Ecuador and recommended for the Amazon and Tayrona. Six-month passport validity.

Cartagena's walled-city hotels run at US-Caribbean prices; the rest of Colombia is significantly cheaper. Medellín and the coffee region are best value.

Transport on the ground
Domestic flights (Avianca, Latam, Wingo, Easyfly) are essential — the country is mountainous and the road network slow. Bogotá–Medellín 50min, Bogotá–Cartagena 90min. Use Uber or Cabify in cities (cheaper and safer than street taxis). Rent a car only in the coffee region; let drivers handle the Andes.
