Lisbon is generally safe for travelers. The US State Department lists Portugal at Level 1 — "Exercise Normal Precautions". Portugal is one of the safest countries in Europe with low crime, friendly locals, and excellent value for travelers.

Príncipe Real is the safest first-trip pick in Lisbon — lisbon's leafiest, most grown-up neighbourhood — 19th-century palaces and a restaurant scene that matters. Alfama is the strong alternative if you want couples and culture.

Tram 28 is touristy. The fado is real. The smaller houses (Clube de Fado, Mesa de Frades, Parreirinha de Alfama) book mostly Portuguese audiences on weeknights; by Saturday the mix tips touristy, but the singers don't change. Go Tuesday or Wednesday.

Very — it's a dense, residential neighbourhood where people are out on the street until midnight. Pickpockets on Tram 28 and at the Miradouro das Portas do Sol are the main concern. Walk with your phone in a front pocket.

Steep. Seriously steep. If mobility is a concern, base yourself in Baixa or the Chiado side and visit Alfama on day trips — the Castelo de São Jorge has its own elevator up from Baixa (the Elevador do Castelo) that most people don't know exists.

12 June (evening) — Lisbon's biggest neighbourhood party, with Alfama in particular covered in paper decorations and grilled-sardine smoke. Book lodging three months ahead; prices double.

If you sleep with earplugs and want a full night's partying included in your hotel package, it's great. Otherwise, stay in the Chiado or Príncipe Real (both a 5-minute walk away) and visit Bairro Alto for the evening. You'll get the party without the 4 a.m. clean-up soundtrack.
