Castles, beer gardens & the Autobahn
Germany offers fairy-tale castles, efficient cities, and the world's best beer culture. Berlin's nightlife, Munich's Oktoberfest, and the Black Forest deliver vastly different experiences.

Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, the East Side Gallery, Neukölln nightlife, the Tempelhof airfield. Day-trip to Potsdam's Sanssouci. Add Dresden and Leipzig for the Saxony tour.
Marienplatz, Englischer Garten, beer halls, Oktoberfest in late September. Day-trip to Neuschwanstein, Berchtesgaden, and the Salzburg border. Use Munich as your Alps base.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Würzburg, Bamberg's nine breweries, the Black Forest cake-and-cuckoo-clock heartland from Baden-Baden to Triberg. Drive — public transport thins fast.
Castle-dotted Rhine Gorge between Mainz and Koblenz (KD ferry the way to do it), Cologne's cathedral, Aachen's hot springs, and the Moselle wine country.
Hamburg's Speicherstadt and Reeperbahn, Lübeck's marzipan, Sylt for North Sea beaches. Underrated and largely tourist-free outside summer.
| Period | Verdict |
|---|---|
| May–early Jul | Sweet spot — warm enough for beer gardens, cool enough for hiking, no school crowds. |
| Jul–Aug | Peak prices, packed Bavaria; cities can be hot and humid. |
| late Sep | Oktoberfest peak — book Munich a year out; rest of Germany at its harvest-best. |
| Dec | Christmas markets in every city — Nuremberg, Dresden, Cologne, Berlin. Magical, cold, busy. |
