Ipanema is the safest first-trip pick in Rio de Janeiro — rio's aspirational beach neighbourhood — the bossa-nova song, the sunday street-closure, and the most polished version of the city. Santa Teresa is the strong alternative if you want couples and art lovers.

The beachfront and the main commercial streets are safe day and night. Side streets off Nossa Senhora de Copacabana and the adjoining Copacabana after 02:00 warrant standard urban caution. Keep phones secure on the beach; petty theft is the top concern.

Ipanema is more polished, quieter, more literary, and has the better restaurant scene. Copacabana is denser, more historic (the iconic mosaic promenade), and cheaper. Both are 15 minutes apart.

Every Sunday year-round, 07:00-18:00. Both Avenida Vieira Souto (Ipanema) and its Leblon continuation close to cars. The atmosphere peaks 11:00-17:00 with the samba and capoeira circles on the Leblon end.

Cariocas don't. Stick with bottled water, which is widely available. Ice at restaurants is fine. Street fruit juices are safe if from a vendor using bottled water.

Safe by day; the main streets remain fine at night. Side streets and the walk down to Lapa after dark warrant taxi/Uber. The neighbourhood borders favelas on its western side; the public safety stops at well-marked points.
