Is it safe to walk in Lisbon at night?
Lisbon is one of Western Europe's safer capitals for night walking, and most neighborhoods are fine well past midnight. The historic center — Baixa, Chiado, Alfama, Bairro Alto — stays lively and reasonably lit throughout the night, with enough foot traffic to feel comfortable. Bairro Alto in particular gets crowded until 2 or 3 a.m. on weekends. The main caution is Martim Moniz and the blocks immediately around Intendente late at night, where petty crime and drug activity are more common; it's not dangerous in a serious sense, but it warrants more awareness than, say, Príncipe Real. Pickpocketing is the actual risk in Lisbon, day or night, concentrated on tram 28, in Alfama, and anywhere tourist density is high. Keep your phone in a front pocket, don't drape a bag loosely over one shoulder, and you will almost certainly have no problems. Violent crime against tourists is genuinely rare.
