What scams should I watch out for in Lisbon?
Pickpockets are the main threat, concentrated on tram 28E (the whole route, not just Alfama), the elevadores, and any crowded miradouro. Keep your phone in a front pocket or a bag worn across your chest, not dangling. The "friendship bracelet" hustle runs along the waterfront near Terreiro do Paço: someone ties a bracelet on your wrist before you can object and then demands payment. Just keep walking. Fake "monks" offering amulets operate similarly around Baixa. Restaurant touts near Rossio and along Rua Augusta sometimes steer you into places with inflated menus -- walk past, check Google Maps reviews, and go where locals are already sitting. A subtler one: some restaurants bring unrequested bread, olives, or presunto to your table; these are charged separately and the bill reflects it. You can decline or send them back. ATMs on tourist corridors occasionally have card-skimming attachments -- use machines inside bank branches when possible.
