What's the best neighborhood to stay in Lisbon?
Stay in Príncipe Real if you want a quiet base with good restaurants, independent bookshops, and easy access to everything else. It sits on a hill between Bairro Alto and the riverfront, walkable to Chiado in ten minutes and Alfama in twenty, with enough miradouros nearby that you never feel landlocked. Hotels here trend mid-to-upper range; Bairro Alto Hotel on the Chiado border is the benchmark, but smaller guesthouses on Rua da Escola Politécnica run significantly cheaper. Avoid Baixa Pombalina as a base unless you genuinely prefer large chain hotels and tourist-density crowds; it's convenient but characterless. Alfama is photogenic and central to fado culture, but the streets are steep, parking is impossible, and the accommodation stock is thin. For longer stays, Mouraria offers cheaper rents and a more lived-in feel with direct tram access downtown. For a first visit of three to five nights, Príncipe Real or adjacent Chiado gives you the most functional combination of walkability, dining, and neighborhood texture.
