Marriott Bonvoy sweet spots.
Not the best hotel currency — the biggest. When the trip is decided and the city is booked solid, Bonvoy is the program that always has a hotel there.
Category 4-5 properties at off-peak pricing get 0.8-1¢. Peak dynamic pricing drops it below 0.5¢ often.
Bonvoy's argument is coverage. Eight-thousand-plus properties across thirty brands means the program's answer to almost any itinerary is "yes, several" — a claim Hyatt cannot make and Hilton only sometimes can. We value the points at 0.7¢ and the dynamic pricing means you should check every redemption against the cash rate, but the sheer footprint keeps Bonvoy load-bearing in real trip planning.
Played deliberately, it clears its valuation. Off-peak dynamic pricing at quality properties, the fifth-night-free perk on award stays, and the occasional outsized city redemption — our Italy itinerary books the JW Marriott Venice at 90K for two nights against an $1,800 cash rate, right at 2¢ — are the moves. Amex MR and Chase UR both feed it at 1:1, though at 0.7¢ a point you should transfer against priced stays only.

The sweet spots
Fifth night free on award stays
The cheapest of five consecutive award nights is free, no status required. On week-long resort stays it is the difference between Bonvoy points working and not.
Off-peak city and resort redemptions
Dynamic pricing has an off-peak floor worth hunting: shoulder-season dates at well-located properties regularly clear 1¢/pt. Our Venice example — 90K for two JW Marriott nights against $1,800 cash — is the shape of it.
Coverage plays: the only points hotel in town
Marrakech, safari gateways, secondary Asian cities, U.S. college towns on game weekends — Bonvoy's edge is being bookable where the boutique programs simply aren't. Our Morocco itinerary leans on exactly this.
Watch out for
- Peak dynamic pricing routinely drops value below 0.5¢ per point — the same property that is a fine off-peak redemption is a bad peak one. Check the cash rate every single time.
- Transfers from Amex MR and Chase UR take 1-2 days and convert a ~2¢ currency into a 0.7¢ one — top up to a priced stay, never park points in Bonvoy.
- Award pricing has no chart and no ceiling at the top end; aspirational St. Regis and Ritz-Carlton nights can run six figures of points.
- The fifth-night-free perk applies to award stays of five-plus nights in standard rooms — split stays and premium rooms lose it.
How to earn Marriott Bonvoy points
- Amex MR and Chase UR both transfer at 1:1 — useful strictly as a top-up mechanism when a priced stay is a few thousand points out of reach.
- Paid stays with promotions registered (Bonvoy runs them near-continuously) are the realistic engine; the program pays best to people who were staying at Marriotts anyway.
- Hotel packages and points advances price differently across brands — before a big redemption, compare the same dates across nearby Bonvoy properties; the spread within one city is often 2× at the same tier.

Frequently asked
Are Marriott points worth anything?
About 0.7¢ each — modest per point, but the program's footprint is the actual product. Off-peak redemptions at quality properties, the fifth night free, and being bookable in markets no other points program covers are where Bonvoy earns its place.
How does Marriott's fifth night free work?
On award stays of five or more consecutive nights in a standard room, the lowest-point night is free — no elite status required. It is the single most reliable way to push Bonvoy redemptions above their average value.
Should I transfer Amex or Chase points to Marriott?
Only to complete a specific priced stay. Both transfer at 1:1, but you are converting a ~2¢ flexible point into a 0.7¢ hotel point — sensible as a top-up, value-destroying as a strategy.
