Fjords, volcanoes & Middle-earth magic
New Zealand packs glaciers, geothermal springs, and emerald valleys into two compact islands. It is the adventure capital of the Southern Hemisphere.

Auckland is the gateway; Rotorua for geothermal Maori cultural shows and mud pools; Taupo and Tongariro for volcano hikes; Wellington for cafes, museums, and the windiest capital on Earth.
Christchurch and the Banks Peninsula, Kaikoura whale watching, the Marlborough Sounds, and Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc tastings. Connect by the Coastal Pacific train.
Franz Josef and Fox glaciers (heli-hike them while they're still walkable), Wanaka, Queenstown for adventure sports, and the Milford and Doubtful Sound cruises out of Te Anau.
The southernmost stretch — kiwi-spotting in the wild, Curio Bay sea lions, Nugget Point lighthouse. Add four nights minimum to a South Island trip.
Sub-tropical north — Cape Reinga, the Bay of Islands' Hole in the Rock, kauri-forest walks, the Twin Coast Highway. Three days from Auckland.
| Period | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Dec–Feb | Summer — peak hiking, beach weather; Queenstown busy; book the Great Walks 6+ months ahead. |
| Mar–May | Best overall — autumn colour in Wanaka and Arrowtown, smaller crowds, great prices. |
| Jun–Aug | Ski season Queenstown/Wanaka; Milford Sound at its most dramatic; Auckland and Northland mild. |
| Sep–Nov | Spring — wildflowers, lambs, fewer tourists, swing prices low. |
US, UK, Canadian, Australian and EU passport holders need an NZeTA (NZD$23, including IVL tourism levy) and pay an additional NZD$100 levy. Apply online before flight; valid 2 years, 90 days per stay.
New Zealand prices climbed steeply post-pandemic. Queenstown runs 30–50% above the national average; Northland and the Catlins remain cheaper.
Rent a car or campervan — NZ is built for road trips. Inter-island ferry (Wellington–Picton, 3h30) is part of the experience; book vehicle slots months out in summer. Domestic flights (Air NZ, Jetstar) are useful for the long Auckland–Queenstown jump (2h vs 24h drive). The TranzAlpine (Christchurch–Greymouth) and Coastal Pacific are the rail highlights.
