Bali beaches, Komodo dragons & 17,000 islands
Indonesia stretches across a vast archipelago from Sumatra's jungles to Bali's rice terraces and Raja Ampat's pristine reefs. The diversity of cultures and landscapes is staggering.

Ubud for jungle, yoga, and Tegallalang's rice terraces; Canggu for surf and design hotels; Uluwatu for cliff bars and big waves; Sidemen and Munduk for the Bali that hasn't been Instagrammed flat. Five days minimum, ten preferred.
Bali's quieter neighbour — Mount Rinjani trekking, Kuta Lombok surf, and the Gilis for diving and reef snorkelling. Fast boat from Bali in 90 minutes.
Yogyakarta is the cultural capital — Borobudur and Prambanan temples, the kraton, the batik scene. Mount Bromo's sunrise crater is one of the great Asian landscapes.
Liveaboards from Labuan Bajo to see Komodo dragons, Pink Beach, Padar viewpoint and the manta rays of Manta Point. Best May–October.
Sumatra for orangutan trekking in Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba; Raja Ampat (West Papua) for arguably the best diving on Earth — but a 24-hour journey from Jakarta and a serious budget commitment.
| Period | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Apr–Oct | Dry season everywhere except Maluku/Papua — peak Bali, Komodo and Java. |
| Jul–Aug | Busiest, priciest. European school-holiday Bali; book ahead 60+ days. |
| Nov–Mar | Wet season — Bali still workable (rain in afternoon bursts), Java and Komodo less so. Cheaper rates, fewer crowds. |
US, UK, Canadian, Australian and EU passport holders get a Visa on Arrival (IDR 500,000 / ~$32) good for 30 days, extendable once. Apply online via the e-VOA portal to skip the airport queue. Six-month passport validity required.
Bali absorbed pandemic-era price hikes — Canggu/Uluwatu now run 30–50% above pre-2020. Ubud, Lombok and Java remain great value.
Domestic flights (Garuda, Lion, Citilink, AirAsia Indonesia) cover the long jumps — Jakarta–Yogya 1h, Bali–Komodo 90min. Bali day-rates with driver cost $40–60 and beat scooter risk. Fast boats Bali–Gilis ($30–50). For Komodo and Raja Ampat, liveaboards are the way; book through reputable operators only.
