Phuket is Thailand's largest island and its most commercially developed, which is both the point and the caveat. It suits travellers who want a proper beach holiday with infrastructure behind it — direct long-haul flights into HKT, a full spread of pool villas and family resorts, and enough restaurants and beach clubs to fill a week without repeating yourself. The west coast beaches do most of the heavy lifting: Kamala and Surin lean quieter and more upscale, Patong is loud and unrepentant about it, while Bang Tao has emerged as the go-to for families and longer stays anchored around its lagoon resort strip.
Pricing here is unusually compressed.
