Glaciers, geysers & northern lights
Iceland is a geological wonderland of erupting geysers, black-sand beaches, and the northern lights dancing overhead. The Golden Circle and Ring Road are road-trip dreams.

The capital is small (130,000 people), walkable in a day, and worth a night for Hallgrímskirkja, the harbour seafood, and Reykjanes geothermal beach baths. Most travellers use it as bookends to a road trip.
Þingvellir's continental rift, Geysir, Gullfoss waterfall — three sights, one easy day-trip. Add the Secret Lagoon or Sky Lagoon to round it out. Doable as a day from Reykjavík.
Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, the black-sand beach at Reynisfjara (do not turn your back on the sea), Vík village, the Sólheimajökull glacier hike, and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Two nights minimum.
The full circuit takes 7–10 days minimum. East fjords are the quietest, most underrated stretch — Seyðisfjörður's rainbow road, the puffins of Borgarfjörður Eystri.
Westfjords for serious off-grid driving (only fully open June–September) — Dynjandi waterfall, Látrabjarg cliffs, Hornstrandir hiking. The Highlands (Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk) are 4WD-only and summer-only.
| Period | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Jun–Aug | Midnight sun, all roads open, puffins nesting, peak prices and crowds — book 6+ months out. |
| Sep–Oct | Best overall — northern lights returning, autumn colour, manageable Ring Road. |
| Nov–Mar | Aurora season — short daylight (4–6 hours mid-winter), F-roads closed, ice caves open. Stick to south coast or Reykjavík base. |
| Apr–May | Shoulder — daylight returning, prices reasonable, but interior still snowed-in. |
US, UK, Canadian and Australian passport holders enter the Schengen Area visa-free for 90 days in any 180-day window. From mid-2026 the EU's ETIAS authorisation is required (€7, valid 3 years). Six-month passport validity beyond your departure date.
Iceland is the most expensive country in this list and one of the most expensive on Earth. A 7-day Ring Road trip costs $4,000+ for two without trying. Petrol is steep ($8/gal); food is steeper.
Rent a car at KEF airport — Iceland is built for road trips. A 2WD covers the Ring Road June–September; you need 4WD (and gravel insurance) for the F-roads, Westfjords shoulder season, and any winter driving off the south coast. Domestic flights (Icelandair, Air Iceland Connect) reach Akureyri and Egilsstaðir if you're short on time. Avoid the BSÍ bus network — it's slow and expensive vs. driving.

June–August for midnight sun and full Ring Road access. February–March for the strongest Northern Lights odds (and the cheapest hotel rates). Avoid November (shortest days, worst weather). Winter travel is rewarding but requires 4WD rental and flexibility — road closures are common.
