Is it safe to walk in Zurich at night?
Zurich is one of the safer large cities in Europe, and walking at night is generally fine throughout the center. The area around Langstrasse in Kreis 4 is the city's red-light and nightlife district, and while it looks rougher than the rest of Zurich, it is not dangerous — just louder and more chaotic after midnight. The main train station, Hauptbahnhof, draws the usual assortment of late-night loiterers, but incidents targeting tourists are uncommon. Standard precautions apply: keep your phone out of sight in crowds, don't leave a bag unattended at a bar, and be aware that public drunkenness increases on Friday and Saturday nights around Langstrasse and the lake promenade. Swiss law enforcement has a visible presence and responds quickly. Women walking alone report feeling comfortable in most neighborhoods at most hours. The bigger practical concern is not safety but transit: trams stop around midnight on weekdays, so plan around the night-bus network or budget for a taxi.
