Are there neighborhoods to avoid in Zurich?
Zurich is one of the safest cities in Europe, and there is no neighborhood a careful traveler needs to avoid outright. The area around Langstrasse in Kreis 4 has a visible sex-work and drug scene, particularly after dark, but it is also home to some of the city's best bars, restaurants, and record shops, and is not dangerous in any meaningful sense. Zurich's most serious drug issues historically centered on Platzspitz Park and later the Letten rail viaduct, but both were cleaned up in the 1990s. Today even those sites are ordinary public spaces. Petty theft exists, as in any major city, so keep the usual awareness on the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) concourse and packed tram lines. The practical concern in Zurich is not safety but cost -- a beer in the wrong bar can run you CHF 9, and that is the only thing likely to hurt you.
