Airport lounges have gone from a nice-to-have to a survival tool. Boarding a flight after a $30 airport meal and 40 minutes on a crowded gate seat looks very different from boarding after a shower, a hot breakfast, and two hours of quiet Wi-Fi in a lounge.
The question is which card gets you into the best lounges for the least money. The answer depends on which airports you fly through and which lounge networks are actually there. Below are the four cards worth carrying — ranked by lounge network quality, not by annual fee.

The Platinum Card from American Express
The most premium lounge network on any card. Centurion Lounges are the standard-setter — best food, best space, best hours — and Amex Platinum is one of the only two cards that gets you in. Add Delta Sky Club (when flying Delta), Priority Pass Select, and dozens of independent lounges and this card covers virtually every major airport in the developed world.
Capital One Venture X Rewards
The best value premium lounge card at $395. Capital One Lounges (Dulles, DFW, Denver, LGA and growing) rival Centurion for quality — the DFW Capital One Lounge is one of the top-rated lounges in the world. Add Priority Pass Select and Plaza Premium partner lounges and you have Amex-Platinum-lite for half the fee. The catch is footprint: if you fly through JFK or SFO regularly, Capital One does not have a home lounge yet.
Chase Sapphire Reserve
Priority Pass Select and Chase Sapphire Lounges (opening in select major airports). The Sapphire Lounge network is small but growing (BOS, JFK, LAS, PHX). Priority Pass access here is unlimited and includes some restaurants — a benefit Amex Platinum stripped out in 2019. If you already have the Reserve for its points ecosystem, the lounge access is a solid secondary benefit.
The Business Platinum Card from American Express
Same lounge access as personal Amex Platinum (Centurion, Delta Sky Club, Priority Pass) at a business-card use case. Worth carrying if you have a business large enough to justify the $695 fee and want lounge access without carrying the personal card too.
The bottom line
For most premium travelers, the Amex Platinum is the answer. Centurion + Delta Sky Club + Priority Pass covers every major US airport and most international hubs. The $695 fee is high but the effective cost after $200 airline credit, $200 Uber Cash, hotel and CLEAR credits often drops to net $200-300 for people who actually use the credits.
The Venture X is the strong runner-up and, for a lot of travelers, the smarter card. If your home airport has a Capital One Lounge (Dulles, DFW, Denver, LGA, Las Vegas), you are getting Centurion-quality lounge access for $300 less per year. Add the $300 travel credit and 10K anniversary miles ($100 value) and the card mathematically returns its fee before you swipe.
