United Airlines is deploying its Boeing 787 fleet on routes stretching beyond 21 hours gate-to-gate, with one-stop services from Los Angeles to Southeast Asian destinations topping the carrier's longest Dreamliner operations.
The airline's most time-intensive 787 service connects Los Angeles International Airport to Bangkok via Hong Kong International Airport, clocking a maximum block time of 21 hours and 40 minutes, according to schedule data covering August 2026 through March 2027. A second one-stop route from Los Angeles to Ho Chi Minh City through Hong Kong follows at 20 hours and 45 minutes. Both services operate daily using the 787-9 variant and were introduced or resumed in 2025.
Among nonstop offerings, United's San Francisco-to-Singapore route leads at 17 hours and 40 minutes, with twice-daily 787-9 frequencies. Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport to Sydney follows at 17 hours and 35 minutes on daily winter-season service, while the return leg from Delhi to Newark Liberty International Airport requires 17 hours and five minutes. The carrier's Johannesburg-to-Newark return clocks 16 hours and 25 minutes on up to daily frequencies, and San Francisco to Adelaide — a route launched in 2025 that reportedly achieved a 53 percent load factor in its inaugural season — takes 16 hours and 20 minutes.
United operates 89 Boeing 787s across all three variants, consisting of 56 787-9s, 21 787-10s, and 12 787-8s. The Dreamliner constitutes 37 percent of the airline's widebody fleet, with an average aircraft age of 7.2 years. United is one of only three carriers worldwide operating all three 787 variants. The carrier took delivery of its first 787 in September 2012, though an earlier frame off the production line also entered United's fleet.
Most of the airline's longest nonstop 787 routes qualify as ultra-long-haul operations, typically defined as services exceeding 16 hours. The analysis examined maximum block times, measured from chocks-off to chocks-on and including taxiing periods and allowances for minor delays at both ends of each route.
