Where East meets West across the Bosphorus
Turkey straddles two continents and blends Ottoman grandeur with Mediterranean warmth. Cappadocia's fairy chimneys and Istanbul's mosques are bucket-list icons.

Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar, the Bosphorus ferries — and the Asian-side neighbourhoods (Kadıköy, Üsküdar) that locals swear are the better half. Four days minimum.
Hot-air balloons over Göreme, cave hotels, the underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı, and hikes through the Ihlara and Rose valleys. Two nights minimum; book balloons six months ahead.
Ephesus' ancient ruins, Pamukkale's white travertines, Bodrum's gulet sailing, and the under-the-radar villages of the Datça peninsula. Best by car.
Turquoise water, the Lycian Way trail, Olympos tree houses, Kaş diving, and the Roman ruins of Aspendos. Antalya itself is increasingly Russian-tourist heavy — base further west.
Mount Nemrut's giant stone heads, Lake Van's monasteries, Mardin's stone city, and the trout streams of the Black Sea coast. Less travelled, requires more planning, rewards it.
| Period | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Apr–May | Sweet spot — wildflowers in Cappadocia, comfortable Istanbul, swimmable Med by mid-May. |
| Jun–Aug | Coast packed and pricey; Cappadocia hot but workable; Istanbul humid but functional. |
| Sep–Oct | Best overall — coast still warm into October, Cappadocia at its most photogenic, Istanbul perfect. |
| Nov–Mar | Cool, cheap, magical for Istanbul and Cappadocia (snow on the fairy chimneys); coast shut down. |
US, Canadian and Australian passport holders need an e-visa ($50, valid 180 days, multiple entry, processed online in minutes). UK and EU passport holders can enter visa-free for 90 days. Six-month passport validity from your departure date.
Currency depreciation has kept Turkey one of Europe's best food-cost ratios; pay in lira where possible. Istanbul Old City prices for tourists; eat where Turks eat.
Domestic flights (Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, Sun Express) are cheap and frequent — Istanbul–Cappadocia 1h, Istanbul–Antalya 1h. Long-distance buses are excellent and overnight options save a hotel night. Trains are slow except the Ankara–Istanbul YHT high-speed line (4h). Rent a car for the Aegean and Lycian coasts; never drive in Istanbul.

April–May and September–October are ideal — mild weather, clear skies, smaller crowds. Summer is extremely hot in Istanbul and the Aegean coast. Winter is atmospheric in Istanbul but closes down most of the Mediterranean resorts. Cappadocia's hot-air balloon season runs year-round, with best conditions April–November.
