Where to go in Switzerland
Zürich & the East
Zürich for the lake, the Old Town, Niederdorf nightlife; St Gallen for its UNESCO library; Liechtenstein as a 30-minute curiosity. Best base for arrival but rarely the destination on its own.
Bern & the Mittelland
Bern's UNESCO Old Town and bear pit, Lucerne's painted bridges and Mt Pilatus, Lake Brienz's turquoise water. The 'easy Switzerland' between Alps and lakes.
Berner Oberland (Interlaken, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen)
The Switzerland of the postcard — Jungfraujoch railway, Schilthorn, Eiger Trail. Use Lauterbrunnen valley as base; Grindelwald for ski/hiking; Interlaken for adventure sports.
Zermatt & Valais
The Matterhorn from Gornergrat, year-round skiing on the Klein Matterhorn glacier, the wine villages of the Rhône valley. Car-free Zermatt; arrive on the Glacier Express from St Moritz.
Italian Switzerland (Lugano, Locarno, Bellinzona)
Sub-tropical south — palm trees, Italian cuisine, lake Lugano, Bellinzona's three UNESCO castles. Direct trains from Zürich through the Gotthard Base Tunnel in 2h.

Visa requirements
Switzerland is in Schengen — US, UK, Canadian, Australian and EU passport holders enter visa-free for 90 days in any 180-day window. From mid-2026 the EU's ETIAS authorisation is required (€7, valid 3 years). Six-month passport validity beyond your departure date.

Switzerland is the most expensive country on this list. The Swiss Travel Pass (8 days CHF 459) saves serious money on multi-stop trips and includes most mountain railways at half price.

Transport on the ground
Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) is the world's best rail network — never late, never confusing. The Glacier Express, Bernina Express, and GoldenPass Line are scenic-rail bucket-list rides included on the Swiss Travel Pass. Cable cars and funiculars get you everywhere a train doesn't. Rent a car only for off-grid valleys — and remember road tax (CHF 40 vignette) for any motorway use.
