Tea hills, ancient cities & golden beaches
Sri Lanka is a compact island packed with eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, wildlife safaris, and surf breaks. The hill-country tea plantations and Sigiriya rock fortress are highlights.

The four UNESCO ancient cities of central Sri Lanka. Climb Sigiriya rock at sunrise (or Pidurangala for the better view of Sigiriya itself), Dambulla cave temples, Polonnaruwa ruins by bicycle. Three nights in Habarana base.
Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, the train ride from Kandy to Ella (one of the world's most scenic), tea-plantation walks at Nuwara Eliya and Haputale, Adam's Peak pilgrimage hike. Three to five days.
Galle Fort's Dutch colonial old town, Mirissa whale watching (December–April), Tangalle's wide quiet beaches, Yala safaris for leopards. Beach base for last 3–5 days of any trip.
Opposite monsoon to the south — best May–September. Arugam Bay for surf, Pasikuda for empty beaches, Trincomalee for Hindu and Buddhist temples.
The Tamil cultural heart, only fully reopened to tourism after the civil war. Nallur Kandaswamy temple, the islands of Delft and Karainagar. Different cuisine, different pace, very few tourists.
| Period | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Dec–Mar | Peak south and west — dry, perfect beach weather, whale season Mirissa. Cultural Triangle and hill country also excellent. |
| May–Sep | Monsoon south and west; east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) at its best for surf and beaches. |
| Apr & Oct | Inter-monsoon — variable everywhere; cheaper rates, often a gamble. |
US, UK, Canadian, Australian and EU passport holders need an ETA via eta.gov.lk ($50 for 30 days, double-entry). Apply 3+ days before flight. Six-month passport validity. Yellow fever certificate required if entering from a yellow-fever country.
Sri Lanka is meaningfully cheaper than India per-day for the equivalent quality, especially mid-range. The currency depreciation has held tourist prices down well.
Hire a car-with-driver — the standard ($60–80/day) and by far the easiest way to see the island. Trains cover Kandy–Ella scenically (book 2nd class reserved). Domestic flights only really make sense Colombo–Jaffna or Colombo–Trincomalee. PickMe is the local Uber for in-city transit.
