Safari, wine & Table Mountain views
South Africa combines Big Five safaris, Cape Town's wine country, and the Wild Coast into one remarkable destination. The diversity of experiences rivals any country on earth.

Table Mountain, Robben Island, Bo-Kaap, Camps Bay beach, the Cape Peninsula drive (Boulders penguins, Cape Point), and the Winelands at Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Five days minimum.
Drive the N2 from Mossel Bay to Storms River — Knysna lagoon, Tsitsikamma forest canopy walks, Plettenberg Bay beaches, Wilderness lakes. Allow 5–7 days.
The country's flagship safari — Big Five plus painted dogs, vast wildlife density. Self-drive in your own car (cheap) or stay at a Sabi Sands private reserve (premium, off-road game drives, walking safaris). Three nights minimum.
Durban's beaches, Battlefields tours (Isandlwana, Rorke's Drift), the Drakensberg mountain range for hiking, and iSimangaliso Wetland Park's hippos and turtles.
Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill, Maboneng and Soweto tours, plus the gateway to Madikwe and Pilanesberg game reserves and the Magoebaskloof mountains.
| Period | Verdict |
|---|---|
| May–Sep | Peak safari — dry winter, animals concentrate at waterholes; cool to cold mornings; Cape Town wet and windy. |
| Oct–Apr | Cape summer — beach weather, wine country at its best, but Kruger lush, hot and bushy (game-viewing harder). |
| Sep–Oct | Sweet spot for combining Cape Town and safari — mild Cape, late dry-season Kruger. |
| Dec 15–Jan 5 | Cape peak prices and crowds; book everything 6+ months out. |
US, UK, EU, Canadian and Australian passport holders enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Yellow fever certificate required if entering from a yellow-fever country. Six-month passport validity with at least two blank pages required.
South Africa offers extraordinary value at the mid-range. Wine country and Cape Town can run 30% above the rest. Private safari reserves are world-class but premium-priced.
Rent a car — South Africa has excellent roads and right-hand drive. Domestic flights (FlySafair, SAA, Lift) cover Joburg–Cape Town in 2h. The Blue Train and Rovos Rail are luxury-rail bucket-list rides. Skip Joburg public transit; use Uber there and in Cape Town. Avoid driving at night anywhere.
