Is it safe to walk in Athens at night?
Athens is safe to walk at night by the standards of any major European city. The neighborhoods around Syntagma, Monastiraki, Kolonaki, and Koukaki stay well-lit and populated until well past midnight, particularly in summer. Exarchia has a rougher reputation and the occasional political demonstration, so first-time visitors are better off skipping it after dark. The area immediately around Omonia Square gets seedy late at night, with visible drug use and street harassment, and it is the one zone worth a deliberate detour around. Petty theft, especially pickpocketing on the Metro Line 1 and around Monastiraki flea market, is a more realistic concern than violent crime. Keep your phone in a front pocket, stay aware on crowded streets, and Athens at night is genuinely pleasant. The city runs late by temperament; dinner rarely starts before 9 p.m., and restaurants and bars in Psirri and Thissio are full of locals until 2 a.m. or later.
