Where do locals actually go for aperitivo in Athens?
Athens doesn't have an aperitivo culture in the Italian sense, so the honest answer is that locals gravitate toward a looser equivalent: early-evening drinks with mezedes at a tsipouradiko or a wine bar, typically starting around 7 or 8 p.m. rather than the Italian 6 o'clock slot. In Metaxourgeio and Kerameikos, bars along Keramikou and Megalou Alexandrou streets fill up with a younger, local crowd doing exactly this -- ordering tsipouro or natural wine alongside small plates of cheese, cured meats, or taramosalata. Psyrri has the same pattern but skews slightly more touristy depending on the street. The neighborhood of Kypseli, less covered in travel press, has a handful of low-key wine bars where the clientele is almost entirely Athenian. Cover charges don't exist here; you're expected to order food alongside drinks. If you show up before 8 p.m. on a weekday, you'll often find a seat without maneuvering.
