What's the best neighborhood to stay in Athens?
Stay in Koukaki or Monastiraki, depending on what you want from the trip. Koukaki, just south of the Acropolis, is a genuine residential neighborhood with good tavernas, quieter streets, and easy walkability to the main sites without the tourist markup on everything. Monastiraki puts you directly in the action, close to the flea market, Psyrri's bar scene, and the metro hub at Monastiraki Square, but street noise is real and accommodation runs pricier for equivalent quality. Syntagma is convenient for business travelers using the airport express but feels corporate and lacks character. Avoid Omonia entirely for leisure stays; the area around the square remains rough. If you're visiting in summer, Koukaki's slightly elevated position and narrower streets give marginally more shade and a 10-minute walk gets you to the Acropolis Museum before the crowds thicken. Budget roughly 80-150 EUR per night for a solid mid-range hotel or well-reviewed apartment across any of these areas.
