Pros & cons
Pros
- The 40k-point anniversary night is often worth $200–400 — the fee pays itself back automatically
- Fourth night free on award stays is one of the best hotel perks on any co-brand card
- Platinum Elite status is automatic — no qualifying nights required
- Sign-up bonus is generous enough to cover a full week at most IHG properties
Cons
- IHG portfolio (Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental) is uneven in quality
- Points earn at 26x on IHG stays but need vast quantities for aspirational redemptions
- Platinum Elite benefits are inconsistently honored at franchised properties
- The 40k anniversary cap excludes many InterContinental and Kimpton properties
Our take
The IHG Premier is a case study in a single perk carrying a card. The anniversary free night — usable at any IHG property that prices at 40,000 points or less — regularly returns $200–400 in value on a $99 annual fee. Book a Holiday Inn Express in Manhattan for a business trip and the card has already paid for itself for the next four years.
Beyond the anniversary night, the fourth night free on award stays is the perk that experienced travelers actually chase. Book five nights at an IHG property in points and only pay for four — that alone can save 30,000+ points on a single stay. Stack it with the automatic Platinum Elite status and you get late checkout, room upgrades (when honored), and welcome amenities without the qualifying nights that other programs require.
The catch is IHG itself. The portfolio ranges from budget-tier Holiday Inn Express to top-shelf InterContinental and Six Senses, and the experience varies wildly. If your travel patterns include IHG properties — and for domestic road-trippers and business travelers, they often do — this card is a no-brainer. If you are a boutique-hotel Marriott or Hyatt loyalist, the IHG Premier is not the right fit.
