Pros & cons
Pros
- The 4x categories adapt monthly to where you actually spend — no wasted potential
- $150k annual spending cap on 4x is high enough to matter for most SMBs
- Amex MR is the most flexible business transferable-points currency (20+ transfer partners)
- Coupon-book credits, if used, offset roughly $395 of value against a $375 fee
Cons
- $375 annual fee is high — only worth it for meaningful 4x category spend
- Coupon-book credits require specific behaviors (Walmart+, U.S. telecom) that not every business has
- Amex is not accepted at some suppliers where Visa/Mastercard is (rare, but real)
- Complex earnings structure requires attention — you must know which categories are hitting 4x each cycle
Our take
The Amex Business Gold is the business card for businesses with real spend and predictable categories. The adaptive 4x is the trick: Amex looks at your monthly spend across a defined list of categories (advertising, U.S. supermarkets, U.S. gas, transit, restaurants, computer hardware, and a few more) and awards 4x on your top two categories each month. For a marketing agency spending $8,000/month on ad platforms and $2,000/month on restaurants, that is 40,000 MR points per month on category spend alone — worth roughly $560 in transferred value monthly.
The credit stack is meaningful for the right business. $155 in annual Walmart+ credit if you use Walmart+; $20/month in U.S. wireless credit for business phone lines. Combined, that is $395/year of credits against a $375 fee — before you factor in earnings. If your business will actually use both credits, the fee is negative.
The card falls short only if your business does not have concentrated spend in the eligible categories. If most of your business spending is Amazon Business (which is not on the 4x list) or SaaS software (not on the 4x list unless it goes through advertising categories), you'll effectively be earning 1x on most of your spend and paying $375 for the privilege. Do the category math before applying — it either wins big or does not win at all.
