Rio is not a city that suits every travel personality — and that's part of its honesty. It rewards people who want geography as spectacle: ocean and mountains colliding at the edge of an enormous, chaotic, genuinely beautiful city. The lodging geography splits along predictable lines. Ipanema and Leblon draw travelers who want the beach as their front yard and are willing to pay a premium for the postcode. Copacabana is louder, denser, and more democratic.
