Virgin Atlantic to Launch London-Phuket Service This October

Virgin Atlantic will inaugurate nonstop service between London Heathrow and Phuket International Airport beginning October 18, operating three times per week with Boeing 787-9 aircraft throughout the winter season. The new route represents the carrier's initial entry into the Thai resort market, according to schedule data.

Flights will operate on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays departing Heathrow at 3:45 PM and arriving in Phuket at 9:55 AM the following day, with a block time of 12 hours and 10 minutes. Return service will leave Phuket on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 11:45 AM, touching down at Heathrow at 7:25 PM after 13 hours and 40 minutes aloft.

The thrice-weekly frequency aligns with industry norms for newly introduced long-haul operations, while the deployment of Virgin's 258-seat Boeing 787-9—configured with fewer premium seats than some fleet variants—signals the leisure orientation of the market. A single aircraft will handle the rotation.

The Phuket launch arrives as Virgin Atlantic has trimmed overall operations by approximately 5% year-over-year, now averaging 33 daily departures from its three UK bases of Heathrow, Manchester, and Edinburgh. The carrier discontinued service to both Dubai and Bengaluru from Heathrow earlier this year, moves reportedly influenced by conflict in Iran and strategic network adjustments. Virgin did add Seoul Incheon flights from Heathrow in March.

While the leisure-focused route might appear better suited to London Gatwick—Virgin's former secondary hub—the airline consolidated all operations at Heathrow following the pandemic. Gatwick currently sees Phuket service from TUI Airways, with Norse Atlantic scheduled to enter the market in December.

Heathrow last hosted Phuket flights during the 2021-2022 period when Thai Airways operated circuitous pandemic-era routings via Bangkok, using the resort destination as Thailand's reopening test case. Virgin's service will mark the first Heathrow-Phuket link during standard operating conditions.
