History, pubs & rolling green countryside
The UK packs castles, world-class museums, and a legendary pub culture into a surprisingly compact island. London alone could fill weeks, but Scotland and Wales beg for detours.

British Museum, V&A, the Tate Modern, Borough Market, Soho's late nights, the Tower of London, the Marylebone–Hampstead green walks. Five days minimum and you'll still want a return visit.
Bath's Roman baths and Georgian crescents, the Cotswolds' honey-stone villages, Cornwall's surf coast (Newquay, St Ives) and Padstow seafood. Drive — public transport thins out fast.
Edinburgh for the festival in August (everywhere else of the year for a sane price); the Highlands for Glencoe, Loch Ness, and Skye's Old Man of Storr; Outer Hebrides for the most unspoiled UK coast.
Snowdonia (Eryri) hiking, the Pembrokeshire coast path, Cardiff's redeveloped bay, and the slate-mining valleys of the north. The UK's quiet outdoor wonderland — and English speakers learn the basics of Welsh fast.
Wordsworth country — Windermere, Ambleside, the high fells. Add York for medieval streets and the Minster; Yorkshire Dales for limestone country; Liverpool and Manchester for music heritage.
| Period | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Apr–early Jun | Sweet spot — bluebells, gardens at peak, mild London, no August premium. |
| Jun–Aug | Peak prices, Edinburgh Festival in August (book a year out), Cornwall packed. |
| Sep–Oct | Best overall — autumn colour, cooler walking, harvest dinners, lower prices. |
| Nov–Mar | Cold, dark, magical for Christmas markets and Hogmanay; museums and pubs at their cosiest. |

London is one of the world's most expensive cities; Scotland, Wales and the North-East run 30–40% cheaper. Book trains 12 weeks ahead for advance fares.
Rail covers everything — book on Trainline 12 weeks ahead for £25–60 long-distance fares. London's Tube and bus on contactless tap-and-go. Hire a car for the Cotswolds, Lakes, Highlands, and Cornwall — never for cities. National Express and Megabus cover what trains miss cheaply.

May–September is peak — longer daylight, warmer weather, most gardens open. July–August is Edinburgh Festival season but London gets hot and crowded. September offers the best balance of weather and lower prices. Winter is atmospheric in London and Edinburgh but the Highlands are brutal — plan indoor-heavy itineraries.
