6-day Cape Town, South Africa itinerary

By destination.com editorial · Published July 30, 2026

Six days in Cape Town + the Winelands. Rent a car — you'll want it for Chapman's Peak, Cape Point, and the Stellenbosch day.

Day 1

  1. Land + settle · Note

Long-haul → sleep. Base yourself in Sea Point or De Waterkant for walkability, not the waterfront.

  2. V&A Waterfront (briefly)

Watershed craft market, then dinner at The Test Kitchen Fledgelings (the alumni project).

Day 2

  1. Table Mountain

Cableway up, hike down via Platteklip Gorge if you're fit. Check the weather at 6am — the mountain closes on wind days without warning.

  2. Kloof Street

Coffee at Origin, lunch at Chef's Warehouse (walk-in only).

  3. Bo-Kaap walk

The colored houses. The neighborhood is a real community, not a set — be present about photos of people's homes.

Day 3

  1. Cape Peninsula drive · Transport

Chapman's Peak Drive → Cape Point → Boulders Beach penguins → back via Simon's Town. Full day. Bring sunblock and layers.

  2. Cape Point

Do the walk to the old lighthouse, not the tram. Ends at the tip of the peninsula.

  3. Boulders Beach

African penguin colony. Buy the SANParks day ticket if you're doing Cape Point same-day — bundle discount.

Day 4

  1. Winelands day · Transport

Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. 60-min drive from Cape Town. Book a designated driver or the Franschhoek Wine Tram for hop-off tastings.

  2. Delaire Graff

Lunch with the Simonsberg view. Reserve.

  3. Reyneke or Waterford Estate

Waterford for the wine-and-chocolate pairing; Reyneke for biodynamic reds.

Day 5

  1. Robben Island tour

Book online at least a week ahead. 3.5 hours round-trip from the waterfront. Ex-prisoner guides.

  2. Zeitz MOCAA

Contemporary African art in the converted grain silo. Heatherwick architecture is worth it alone.

  3. Camps Bay sunset

Order a drink at Café Caprice, walk down to the beach for the actual sunset over the Twelve Apostles.

Day 6

  1. Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

Morning. Tree canopy walkway. Bring a picnic — they permit them.

  2. Farewell dinner

La Colombe (Silvermist estate) if it's a splurge night; Kloof Street House if it's not.
