Are there neighborhoods to avoid in Vienna?
Vienna is one of the safest capitals in Europe, and there is no neighborhood where a reasonably attentive traveler needs to feel unsafe walking around. The area around the Westbahnhof and Gürtel ring road — particularly the stretch through the 15th and 16th districts — looks rougher than it is, with some street-level drug activity near the station, but it poses no serious threat. Praterstern in the 2nd district has a similar reputation and similar reality: unpleasant at 2 a.m. if you linger, unremarkable otherwise. The Brunnenmarkt area in the 16th is working-class and loud on market days, which some visitors misread as dangerous when it is simply not polished. Standard urban awareness applies everywhere — keep your phone out of sight on crowded U-Bahn cars, watch for pickpockets near the Stephansdom and Naschmarkt tourist clusters. Beyond that, Vienna does not require the mental map of risky zones that cities like Paris or Rome demand of their visitors.
