What does a local breakfast look like in Vienna?
A Viennese breakfast is built around bread, not eggs. Go to any neighborhood bakery — Felber, Joseph, or Anker are all over the city — order a Semmel (a crispy white roll) or a Kipferl, and pair it with butter, jam, and a thin slice of cold cuts or cheese. Coffee is non-negotiable: a Melange, which is espresso with steamed milk and a little foam, is the standard morning order. Sit-down breakfast at a Kaffeehaus like Café Hawelka in the first district or Café Engländer near the Stadtpark stretches the ritual considerably — you get your roll, a small glass of water alongside your coffee, and the implicit permission to stay for an hour reading a newspaper. Prices are reasonable: a Melange runs around €4–5, a roll under €2. Locals eat early, between 7 and 9, and the bakeries are genuinely crowded by 8.
