What's the best neighborhood to stay in Vienna?
The 1st district (Innere Stadt) puts you within walking distance of the Staatsoper, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and St. Stephen's Cathedral, but hotels there run €180–€350 a night and the streets quiet down strangely early. For most travelers, the 7th district (Neubau) is the smarter base: independent bookshops, good coffee at places like Café Hawelka's neighborhood equivalents, direct U3 access to the center, and hotels and apartments in the €90–€160 range. The 4th (Wieden) and 5th (Margareten) are worth considering if you want slightly lower prices and a more residential feel while staying on the U1/U2 lines. Avoid the area immediately around Westbahnhof unless you're catching an early train — it's functional but charmless. Vienna's U-Bahn is efficient enough that no inner district leaves you stranded, so proximity to a U-Bahn station matters more than the specific district number.
