Is it safe to walk in Paris at night?

Paris is broadly safe to walk at night, and locals do it constantly. The central arrondissements — the Marais, Saint-Germain, the area around the Opéra — stay animated well past midnight and feel secure precisely because foot traffic never fully disappears. The métro runs until around 1 a.m. on weekdays and 2 a.m. on weekends, so you're rarely stranded. The areas that warrant more caution are the northern edges of the 18th arrondissement above Pigalle (particularly around Barbès and the Goutte d'Or), parts of the 19th, and the Seine-Saint-Denis suburbs beyond the périphérique, which is outside Paris proper. Standard urban judgment applies: stay aware, don't flash expensive gear, and avoid poorly lit stretches along the canal at La Villette late at night. Pickpocketing is a more realistic concern than violence. If you're near a major tourist corridor after dark, your bigger problem is overpriced cocktails, not personal safety.
