Are there neighborhoods to avoid in Paris?
Paris is among the safest major European capitals, and the honest answer is that no neighborhood warrants outright avoidance. That said, a few areas require ordinary urban awareness. The immediate surroundings of Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est, particularly after dark, attract petty theft and persistent scammers targeting distracted travelers; keep your bag closed and decline unsolicited help with luggage. The northern stretches of the 18th arrondissement around Château Rouge and parts of the Goutte d'Or see more street-level drug activity than elsewhere, though violent crime toward tourists is rare. Certain banlieues beyond the Périphérique, like Saint-Denis, have a rougher reputation, but most visitors have no reason to go there. Pickpocketing is the dominant risk citywide, concentrated at the Eiffel Tower, Sacré-Coeur, on the Métro (lines 1 and 4 especially), and at major museums. A zipped inner pocket handles roughly ninety percent of the threat.
