What's the best neighborhood to stay in Paris?

The 7th arrondissement delivers the best balance for most travelers: walkable to the Eiffel Tower and Musée d'Orsay, quiet at night, and served by multiple metro lines. Hotels here run expensive but the streets are clean, safe at all hours, and refreshingly free of the souvenir-shop density you get near the 1st or 4th. If budget is a real constraint, the 11th (around Oberkampf and République) gives you genuine Parisian residential life, excellent restaurants on Rue Oberkampf and Rue de la Roquette, and faster metro access across the city than most tourists expect. The Marais (3rd and 4th) is perpetually popular and earns it, but weekend crowds on Rue des Francs-Bourgeois can make it feel like a theme park. Avoid the area immediately around Gare du Nord unless you're catching an early Eurostar, the neighborhood works fine by day but requires more street sense after dark.
