What's the best neighborhood to stay in Paris?
Stay in the 6th arrondissement (Saint-Germain-des-Prés) or the 7th if you want walkability, safety, and a central position without the noise and tourist density of the Marais or the 1st. The 6th puts you within fifteen minutes on foot of the Seine, the Luxembourg Gardens, and a concentration of good restaurants and cafés that serve actual Parisians. Hotels here run expensive — budget €200-400 a night for something decent — but you're paying for location that genuinely saves time. The 7th is quieter, slightly more residential, and nudges you closer to the Eiffel Tower if that matters to you. First-timers sometimes default to the Marais (3rd and 4th), which is lively and well-connected by metro, though it gets crowded on weekends and accommodation quality varies sharply by block. Avoid the area immediately around Gare du Nord unless your only priority is transit access. The 9th and 10th have improved considerably and offer better value if budget is a real constraint.
