Are there neighborhoods to avoid in Munich?
Munich is one of the safest large cities in Europe, and there is no neighborhood a reasonably alert traveler needs to avoid outright. The area immediately around the Hauptbahnhof (central station) draws the usual concentration of street-level drug use and petty theft common to European transit hubs, so keep your bag close and your phone off the table at the surrounding cafes, particularly at night. Hasenbergl and parts of Neuperlach in the outer north and southeast have a rougher reputation among locals, but they are residential districts with minimal tourist infrastructure and essentially no reason to visit rather than genuinely dangerous places. Schwabing, Maxvorstadt, Glockenbachviertel, and the Altstadt are all entirely comfortable after midnight. The practical concerns in Munich skew toward cost rather than safety: pickpocketing on the U-Bahn during Oktoberfest and at Christmas markets warrants attention, but violent crime directed at visitors is rare enough to be a non-issue in your planning.
