Are there neighborhoods to avoid in Istanbul?
Istanbul has no neighborhoods that are genuinely dangerous for tourists in the way that phrase implies in other cities. The area around Tarlabaşı, just off Istiklal Avenue in Beyoğlu, is visibly rough and has petty theft, so walk through with awareness rather than treating it as a leisurely stroll, especially after dark. Dolapdere, adjacent to it, is similar. Beyond those pockets, the bigger practical concern is not safety but scams: the well-documented shoe-shine-drop con in Sultanahmet, tea invitations near Taksim that end with an inflated bill, and carpet shops staffed by aggressive touts. These are financial nuisances, not physical threats. Bağcılar and Esenler are working-class districts far from the tourist center where you simply have no reason to go, not because they're dangerous but because they offer nothing for visitors and getting back wastes time. Keep your phone in a front pocket on the Istiklal tram and you've handled most of what Istanbul actually asks of you.
