Pros & cons
Pros
- 4x on general travel is category-leading — no portal restriction
- 4x on gas and EV charging is unusual for a $95 travel card
- $30 streaming credit is genuinely useful for households with subscriptions
- US Bank's trip protection stack is comparable to Chase Sapphire Preferred's
Cons
- Points value peaks at 1¢ each — no transfer partners at all
- US Bank's online banking and mobile experience trail Chase and Amex substantially
- Foreign transaction fees are technically waived but pricing tends to run slightly off-standard
- Award redemptions require using US Bank's Rewards Center, which is limited compared to Chase Travel
Our take
The Altitude Connect is the most overlooked travel card in the $95 tier. On paper it competes with the Chase Sapphire Preferred (also $95) on nearly every dimension — same fee, similar trip protections, wider bonus categories including gas and EV charging. On earning alone, the Connect quietly beats the CSP for anyone who spends heavily on gas.
The catch is what you can actually do with the points. The Connect maxes out at 1¢/point regardless of redemption path — no transfer partners, no premium-cabin sweet spots. Chase points transferred to Hyatt regularly return 1.7–2.1¢. That difference compounds over time and is the honest reason the CSP outranks the Connect in most published rankings.
The card wins as a supplemental spender for gas/EV charging or for someone who does not want to think about points valuations. Set-and-forget 4x on travel and gas, redeem for statement credit at 1¢, done. For readers who value simplicity over optimization, this card is the right answer at this fee tier.
