Our take
The Southwest Priority is not really about the card itself — it is a vehicle for one thing, the Companion Pass. Earn 135,000 Rapid Rewards points in a calendar year and Southwest lets you bring one companion on every flight you take, paid or award, for the rest of that year and the entire next year. That perk is worth thousands of dollars for a family that flies Southwest even a few times a year.
Standalone, the card is a modest 3x on Southwest, 2x on a mixed bag of everyday categories, and a $149 fee that is offset by a $75 travel credit and 7,500 anniversary points. That is a middle-of-the-road airline co-brand — not bad, not exciting.
The real strategy is stacking. Open a personal Southwest card and a business Southwest card in the same calendar year, earn both welcome bonuses (which count toward the Companion Pass), then knock out remaining spend. Executed in January, you get the pass for nearly 24 months. That is the reason to hold this card. If you are not pursuing the pass and not a Southwest loyalist, skip it.
