For Northern Hemisphere metropolises—New York to Hong Kong, London to Tokyo, or Chicago to Beijing—those optimal paths frequently traverse Greenland, northern Canada, or Arctic waters, trimming hundreds of miles from lower-latitude alternatives and delivering measurable reductions in fuel consumption and block time.

Major hubs in the Southern Hemisphere present a contrasting picture. City pairs such as Sydney–Johannesburg, Santiago–Auckland, and Cape Town–Melbourne lie at latitudes where great circle geometry does bend routes southward, but typically not far enough to justify crossing the Antarctic landmass. In most instances, the mathematically shortest path still runs over open ocean rather than the continent itself, limiting the operational case for Antarctic overflights.

The Northern Hemisphere also concentrates the majority of global passenger demand, reinforcing the commercial logic behind transarctic operations. Carriers including Cathay Pacific, All Nippon Airways, and Korean Air have woven polar routings into their network strategies, capitalizing on the dense traffic flows linking North American, European, and Asian gateways. By contrast, intercontinental travel volumes among Southern Hemisphere cities remain comparatively modest, leaving little economic incentive to develop the specialized infrastructure and regulatory frameworks that Antarctic operations would require.

Safety and infrastructure considerations further tilt the balance. The Arctic corridor benefits from established diversion airports, search-and-rescue coordination, and meteorological support accumulated over decades of operational experience. Antarctica offers none of those backstops, presenting carriers with elevated risk profiles that current market conditions do not justify. Until Southern Hemisphere demand or technological advances shift the equation, the Antarctic continent is likely to remain outside the realm of routine commercial aviation.
