US carriers deploy widebody lie-flat seats on select domestic routes

Major US airlines are equipping certain domestic routes with the same lie-flat business-class seats typically reserved for international long-haul flights, reflecting how America's geographic expanse challenges conventional distinctions between domestic and international service standards.

Carriers including United Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines deploy widebody aircraft configured with premium lie-flat seating on transcontinental routes and services to Hawaii, according to industry observers. United's Boeing 787 aircraft operating between Los Angeles and Newark Liberty, for instance, feature the same Polaris-style lie-flat seats found on the carrier's transatlantic routes to London. American similarly assigns Boeing 777s and 787s with international-standard cabins to key domestic markets.

Delta offers its Delta One lie-flat product on transcontinental services linking New York and Boston with West Coast cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. The Atlanta-based carrier extends the premium offering to Hawaiian routes from Minneapolis, New York, Seattle, Detroit, and Atlanta to Honolulu. Delta is reportedly set to resume service on the Boston-Honolulu pairing—the nation's longest domestic route at 4,427 nautical miles—in December.

The premium-cabin strategy reflects operational realities created by US geography and its proximity to neighboring countries. While longer domestic routes receive international-quality service, many actual international flights to Canada, Mexico, and Caribbean destinations operate with domestic-style configurations due to their shorter distances. The distinction further blurs on certain Canadian routes where passengers clear US border security before departure and arrive at facilities like New York's LaGuardia Airport, which otherwise handles only domestic traffic.

The deployment of widebody aircraft on premium domestic routes allows carriers to maintain consistent fleet utilization while meeting demand for enhanced comfort on flights that can exceed five hours in duration, particularly on coast-to-coast and mainland-Hawaii services.
