United Airlines Resumes 109-Mile Los Angeles–Bakersfield Route

United Airlines has reinstated flights linking Los Angeles International Airport with Meadows Field Airport in Bakersfield, restoring a connection the carrier last maintained twelve years ago. The service, which launched on August 11, operates once daily using Embraer E175 regional jets flown by SkyWest Airlines under the United Express brand.

Despite published block times of approximately one hour, the 109-mile journey typically requires only half that duration in the air. Flight tracking data indicates the quickest outbound sector completed the trip in just 24 minutes, with the extended schedule accommodating LAX's lengthy taxi procedures. The morning departure leaves Los Angeles at 10:43 AM, arriving in Bakersfield before noon, while the afternoon return flight touches down at LAX shortly after 3:00 PM.

Bill LaManque, Director of Kern County Department of Airports, characterized the route's introduction as economically significant for the region. "Each new route expands access, supports local businesses, and strengthens our region's economic vitality," he stated earlier this year, highlighting partnerships with both United and American Airlines.

The Los Angeles service represents United's second intra-California offering from Bakersfield, complementing existing flights to San Francisco. The carrier competes at Meadows Field with American Airlines, which maintains stronger market presence through daily Airbus narrowbody service to Dallas/Fort Worth and multiple daily frequencies to Phoenix using a mix of mainline jets and regional equipment. Data from August 2026 shows American and its regional partners accounting for 130 departures from the Central Valley airport, compared to 142 flights under United's brand.

United's broader Bakersfield network centers on connections to its Denver hub, operated by mainline aircraft, alongside the California coastal routes flown by regional partners. The reinstated Los Angeles link provides an alternative to the two-hour drive between California's largest city and the agricultural center 100 miles to the north.
